The 2004 vintage marked the first time Luca Roagna bottled Pajé as a single-vineyard wine—a milestone in a family history of Barbaresco production stretching back five generations to 1890. The Roagnas acquired the Pajé farmhouse in 1953, and the vineyard sits in a natural amphitheater in the heart of Barbaresco village, at two hundred thirty meters elevation on soils notably high in limestone. This limestone concentration gives Pajé wines their extraordinary structure and aging potential, distinguishing them from the more elegant Asili. Luca's winemaking is deeply traditional: sixty-day submerged-cap maceration, aging in large Slavonian oak botti for three to five years, bottled unfined and unfiltered. The classic 2004 vintage produced harmonious, perfumed Barbaresco of excellent concentration and lively acidity. Now entering its plateau of maturity—expect saffron, truffle, ripe cherry, and dried rose with powerful, elegant tannins. A wine for contemplation, not conversation.
