Vecchie Viti means “old vines,” but in Roagna’s world, that’s not just a cute label—it means serious vine age (most planted pre-WWII), tiny yields, and extreme attention to detail. The Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto already delivers some of Barolo’s most finely etched structure; add Roagna’s old-vine fruit and a vintage like 2019, and you’ve got something epic.

This is traditional Barolo turned up to 11: wild herbs, tar, roses, red currants, and a core of taut, stony energy that unspools for minutes. Long maceration, no new oak, no shortcuts—just Nebbiolo in its most transparent, time-demanding form. It’s not flashy, but it’s deep, resonant, and built to evolve for decades.

In 3L, it’s even more of a statement. One of the rarest formats of one of Roagna’s rarest wines, from a vintage that serious collectors are already chasing. Open it for a once-in-a-decade moment—or stash it away and let the legend grow.

Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The bio-sphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.

Antonio Galloni

"The Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti 2019 is one of the most captivating and beautiful wines I have ever tasted here. Interestingly, it is more open than the pure Pira because it is perfumed and sweeter on the inside. Candy sugar, rose petals, mint, orange peel and kirsch rush across the palate. The 2019 is simply stunning. There's not much more to say." -Vinous

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
Sourced from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto. It is a monopole vineyard and is the largest parcel owned by the Roagna family at 4.88 hectares.
Orientation
Southeast.
Soil
There are 6 unique micro parcels depending on the composition of the terrain which ranges from limestone marl Roca to blue stone.
Viticulture
The vines for this wine are over 50 years old.. The youngest vines for this wine date back to 1937.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 70-90 days.
Aging
The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.
