Tinta Barocca may be better known in Portuguese blends, but under Eben Sadie’s hands, it becomes a stand-alone statement of Swartland terroir. The fruit for Treinspoor comes from old bush vines planted in the 1970s on decomposed granite and iron-rich soils near Malmesbury. Dry-farmed and minimally handled, the result is a wine with depth, tension, and a distinct wildness.

The 2023 shows vivid notes of black cherry, violets, crushed rock, and dried herbs, with a backbone of tannin that gives it real shape and ageability. Compared to lighter reds in the series (Soldaat, Pofadder), Treinspoor has more muscle and savory complexity—yet it still maintains lift and restraint thanks to natural acidity and careful extraction.

Drink it with slow-cooked lamb, grilled eggplant, or aged cheeses—or cellar it 10–15 years to watch its brooding elegance evolve. This is Swartland red at its most rooted and expressive, a deep cut that rewards patience and attention.
