One of Spain's only two DOCa regions, Priorat's distinctive llicorella—a mix of slate and quartz—creates conditions for intensity without harshness. Mas d'en Gil Bellmunt's blend of primarily Garnacha and Cariñena, with small portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, ferments in separate plots with natural yeasts before aging in concrete and large oak vats. The 2021 shows the promise of this approach: medium-bodied, silky, fine tannins that suggest both immediate pleasure and years of development.

"The 2021 Bellmunt Negre is a village wine that showcases the freshness of the Garnacha fruit, which represents 70% of the blend this vintage, complemented with Cariñena from vines planted between 1996 and 1998. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in concrete and used 3,000-liter oak vats for 10 months. It has a bright ruby color, and the nose is all sweet Garnacha fruit, red berries and a spicy and earthy twist. It's medium to full-bodied, with very fine and elegant tannins. It comes in at 14% alcohol and with 5.5 grams of acidity."
