The 2021 Domaine Roulot Monthélie Rouge is a refined and expressive Pinot Noir, showcasing the elegance and charm of this underappreciated village in the Côte de Beaune. Domaine Roulot, internationally renowned for its exceptional white wines from Meursault, applies the same meticulous craftsmanship and respect for terroir to this beautifully balanced red wine. Monthélie’s proximity to Volnay and its limestone-rich soils lend the wine both vibrancy and a delicate structure.

In the glass, the wine reveals a radiant ruby color. The nose is fresh and inviting, with aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and wild strawberries, accented by floral notes of violets and subtle hints of earth and spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins and a lively acidity that highlights its juicy red fruit core. A touch of minerality and a whisper of savory herbs add depth, leading to a clean, elegant finish.

The 2021 vintage, characterized by cooler conditions, imparts this wine with remarkable freshness and precision, emphasizing its bright fruit and graceful structure. This Monthélie Rouge pairs wonderfully with roasted chicken, grilled salmon, or mushroom-based dishes, and its balanced profile makes it versatile at the table. While approachable now for its youthful charm and vibrant character, it has the potential to develop additional nuance over the next 5–7 years. Domaine Roulot’s Monthélie Rouge is a testament to the domaine’s dedication to crafting wines of purity and authenticity, offering a delightful expression of this often-overlooked appellation.

The name Roulot is now a synonym for the very best wine that the village of Meursault can offer. It is rather remarkable when you consider that just 2 generations back the Roulot's were known as producers of Burgundian brandy and eau de vie. But Guy Roulot began leveraging the family's distilling success to purchase small plots of vines in Meursault and by the 1970's was known as a pioneer for producing top quality chardonnay from distinct parcels or ""lieu-dits"".

When Guy passed away unexpectedly in the early '80's his son Jean-Marc was pursuing acting in Paris. In 1989 he returned to take on the reigns of the small Domaine and in the following decades built on his fathers success so well that the wines are now extremely hard to acquire and to afford for most of us.
