Michael Cruse represents a new generation of California sparkling wine producers, drawing exclusively from cool-climate coastal sites to craft méthode champenoise wines of remarkable precision. The Charles Heintz Vineyard, planted in 1982 at 900 feet elevation on Sonoma Coast sandy loam, has become one of California's finest sparkling sources. This Blanc de Noirs (100% Pinot Noir) offers a deeper, more vinous expression than Blanc de Blancs—structured, complex, and age-worthy. Extended lees aging (4+ years) builds autolytic character, adding toasted almond and brioche complexity beneath the bright red fruit. Production is tiny and demand is fierce. Drink now or cellar through the early 2030s. Serve chilled but not ice-cold to appreciate its complexity.
