Antonio Caggiano, Macchia dei Goti' Taurasi Aglianico, 2018
is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
From the clay-limestone soils of Taurasi at 350 meters elevation, Antonio Caggiano’s Macchia dei Goti is a single-vineyard Aglianico aged in French oak barrique for up to 18 months, followed by extended bottle aging. The result is a wine that balances richness with refinement—modern in polish, but firmly rooted in place.
The 2018 opens with ripe plum, black cherry, and wild herbs, layered with licorice, clove, and sweet tobacco. The oak is well-integrated, adding dimension without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and structured, with fine, firm tannins and a long, mineral finish that hints at the volcanic soils beneath the vines.
This is a wine built for hearty fare—braised lamb, aged cheeses, or porcini-laced pasta—and for the cellar. Drink now with a decant or hold for 10–15 years as it evolves into something even more layered and graceful. For lovers of Barolo, Brunello, or structured reds with a Southern Italian soul, Macchia dei Goti is a standout.
