The “Black Label” bottling is Bethel Heights’ deeper, more brooding Pinot—sourced from select blocks of their estate vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, where volcanic soils and persistent winds create fruit with natural tension and density. The 2022 vintage brings freshness and clarity, giving structure without weight.

Expect black cherry, plum skin, and forest spice, wrapped in fine-grained tannins and underpinned by the region’s signature mineral line. It’s a more muscular take than the elegant Casteel, but no less precise. Aged in French oak (mostly used), the wine is polished, but never flashy—built for the long haul.

Pair it with richer fare—duck confit, wild mushrooms, or grilled lamb—or tuck it away for 5–12 years to watch it evolve. For fans of Oregon Pinot that leans savory, textural, and quietly intense, Black Label 2022 is a compelling and cellar-worthy choice.

There's a reason the Willamette Valley has become synonymous with Pinot Noir produced in the United States, and Bethel Heights makes some of the best-- not to mention incredible Chardonnays as well!

In 1977 the Casteel family bought 75 acres of promising looking land northwest of Salem, which has now grown to over 100 acres. Since their first commercial vintage in 1984 the wine has always been produced by the Casteel family, with patriarch Terry at the helm until 2006, when his son Ben took over as winemaker.

The land has been the family's home for nearly 40 years and they treat it with the love and respect you'd expect: they are certified sustainable and on the forefront of the Willamette's eco-friendly practices.

This commitment to the land, in conjunction with the perfectly suited terroir, results in some spectacular wines (both red and white). The Casteels pride themselves on terroir-driven wines, and in fact all but one of the Pinots they produce are named after a place. This is also the reason they grow Chardonnay: it expresses the terroir perfectly.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 93
"The 2022 Pinot Noir Estate is bursting with strawberry, raspberry and orange peel aromas, and with time it reveals touches of cinnamon, bitters and wildflowers. The light-bodied palate is finely astringent and refreshing with complex, bitters-laced flavors and a long, spicy finish. "

Wine Spectator

WS 92
"Taut and vibrant, with a steely core of acidity and tannins that drives the flavors of raspberry, cranberry and dusky spices toward the firm finish."
