Among the most respected names in Beaujolais, Daniel Bouland is known for his uncompromising, site-driven expressions of Gamay—and “Bellevue – Schiste” is one of his most powerful and age-worthy cuvées. From a steep, schist-laced slope in the Morgon cru, this wine captures the darker, more brooding side of Gamay, with a structure that echoes top-tier Burgundy.

The 2015 vintage—ripe and concentrated—has evolved beautifully. Aromas of black cherry, crushed violets, iron, and damp earth rise from the glass. On the palate, it's dense but lifted, with deep fruit, stony minerality, and muscular tannins that have softened with time. There’s a wildness here, but also poise—a wine that’s both grounded and soaring.

Drink now with a decant or cellar further for even more tertiary complexity. Pair with roasted duck, aged cheeses, or lentils with herbs. Bouland’s Bellevue Schiste 2015 is proof that Gamay, in the right hands and place, can go toe to toe with the finest Pinot Noir.

Cru Beaujolais is no longer a secret among wine lovers. For about a decade now names like Lapierre, Foillard and Metras have been among the most sought after by collectors and everyday wine drinkers alike. We have long believed that the wines of Daniel Bouland were deserving of the same attention and devotion, and in the last couple of years that has become a reality.

Bouland's wines come from very old vines and seem to operate on three well-delineated layers: An airy top register of flowers and flint-smoke, the middle layer flush with refined (and sometimes powerful) red fruits, and precise, vividly mineral structures at the low register. It's this near- visualizable depth and detail that sets them apart. Bouland would probably make a great photographer.

The wines can age. Ten years is not asking too much. But most also drink wonderfully on release - especially the Chiroubles, Melanie, and Corcelette. They have brains and brawn. And, most importantly, beauty.
