We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.
This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

"Cogno's 2013 Barolo Cascina Nuova is terrific. Bright red cherry, plum, sweet flowers, white pepper all give the Cascina Nuova its distinctive, bright profile. The tannins are naturally a bit raw at this early stage, but the Cascina Nuova is a superb entry-level wine with plenty of Ravera character." -Vinous

"The 2013 Barolo Cascina Nuova is the most accessible of the various single-vineyard Barolos released by the Elvio Cogno winery. But this vintage is a little different. Proprietor and winemaker Valter Fissore says that 2013 reminds him of 1999 for the deeper sense of structure and depth demonstrated by Nebbiolo this growing cycle. The vines are young, averaging 15 years old, and the wine sees a 40-day maceration period with submerged caps. As a result, this wine shows the austerity of young Barolo with vibrant fruit, deep color richness and lingering flavors of dark fruit and spice. Cascina Nuova is not technically a single-vineyard expression, but the folks at this winery treat it as if it were. The growth of the Novello township within the Barolo appellation has been outstanding. Back in 1994, the Elvio Cogno winery was the only one operating in this area that was once considered removed from the production heart of Barolo. Today, nine producers make wine in this village and have brought Novello to the forefront of the Barolo identity. Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno are largely responsible for bringing Novello out from the shadows. Today, they are dedicating special focus on the Ravera cru that provides the fruit for all their top-shelf wines, including the Barolo Ravera, Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice and the Barolo Ravera Riserva Elena."

"Red berry, rose petal, white pepper and chopped herb are just some of the aromas you'll find on this. The bright full-bodied palate delivers crushed raspberry, dark cherry, star anise and tobacco alongside firm refined tannins and vibrant acidity. It's already tempting but will be even better with more bottle age."
