Founded by Vintners Hall of Fame legend Mike Grgich, this estate has been crafting age-worthy Napa Cabs since the Judgment of Paris era. But don’t expect high-octane, oak-saturated fruit bombs—Grgich Hills has always favored structure, acidity, and site transparency, and the 2019 vintage is no exception.

Sourced from estate vineyards across Yountville, Rutherford, and Calistoga, all certified organic and biodynamic, this Cabernet shows classic Napa richness—think blackberry, cassis, and mocha—but it’s balanced by savory herbs, dusty tannins, and a real mineral backbone. Aged in mostly neutral French oak, the focus is clearly on the fruit and the place, not the barrel.

Drinks well now with a decant, but also built for 10–15 years of graceful evolution. For fans of Napa Cab who love depth without overextraction—or for collectors looking for a more restrained, timeless style—Grgich Hills 2019 is the kind of bottle that reminds you what made Napa great in the first place.

When Miljenko “Mike” Grgich made the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, he had no reason to believe that it would become a legendary wine. He had no idea that he, an American immigrant, would become an American legend.

But three years later, Mike’s Chardonnay took top prize in the Parisian tasting that became known as “The Judgment of Paris,” and Mike and his wine took on historic proportions.

That tasting, famously, turned the wine world on its head. Some of France’s most renowned tasters ranked American wines ahead of France’s finest. In a way, the story is old hat, old news. It’s become a book, a movie and the subject of a gazillion articles.

"Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon skips out of the glass with lively notes of redcurrant jelly, blackberries and black raspberries, plus hints of fragrant earth and dried Provence herbs. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and vibrant, delivering red and blackberry layers with a pleasantly chewy texture, finishing with an herbal lift." -Robert Parker

"Black cherries, black olives, currants and a touch of black pepper come with firm tannins and a hearty, grippy mouthfeel in this full-bodied, classically styled wine. The wine has a heritage aura, like a great Cabernet from the 1980s, and will no doubt age well through at least 2033."
