Named after the wasps (Vespidae) that share the vineyard, Vespidae is the flagship Willamette Valley Pinot from J.K. Carriere, a producer known for building graceful, long-lived wines. The 2021 vintage comes from a mix of high-elevation vineyards and shows the cool, focused personality of the year with beautiful transparency and detail.

It opens with bright cherry, rose petal, and baking spice on the nose, unfolding into layers of red fruit, dried herbs, and subtle forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied and taut, framed by fine-grained tannins and brisk acidity. Partial whole cluster and minimal new oak keep the wine energetic and precise, with a long, mineral finish.

Drink now with a decant, or cellar for 5–10+ years. For fans of Burgundy-influenced Oregon Pinot that’s more linear than lush, Vespidae 2021 is a bottle that rewards both patience and attention.

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
This is the flagship bottling representing three great vineyards. In 2021 its lead is our structured and juicy St. Dolores Estate (13 years) at 48%, followed by the lush fruit of holistically farmed Johan Vineyard (20 years) at 29%, and finishing with the linear acid of old-vine Temperance Hill (41 years) at 23%. All of the vineyards are dryland farmed.
Soil
A mix of volcanic soils from the different sites.
Viticulture
Farmed using organic and certified biodynamic practices
Vinification
Six to eight-barrel-lot wild yeast fermentations in a combinatioon of oak stainless steel using all native yeasts
Aging
100% barrel aged for 15 months: 10% new, 29% one year, 61% two year or older. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in December 2022.
