Joseph Drouhin is, of course, one of the great names of Burgundy. A rare producer that makes fantastic wines across the whole range of prices. Their Musigny is one of Burgundy's most sought-after bottles. But their "everyday-priced" wines are some of the greatest values year in and year out. And in between those extremes, they have a whole range of perfectly terroir expressive wines that over-deliver for price, including gems like the legendary Cotes their Beaune Clos des Mouches, offering close to Grand Cru quality at decidedly lower prices.

"The dark-colored 1999 Pinot Noir Laurene displays black cherry, blackberry, and spice aromas. Medium to full-bodied, intense, and focused, this wine admirably combines outstanding depth with purity. Its grape and black cherry flavors can be found throughout its seamless personality and long, ripe finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years." -Pierre Rovani

"Deep, rich, dense ruby. On the edge. Racy. Dry finish. Lovely smooth texture. Sleek and polished. Long and vigorous."

"The black cherry fruit on the nose is nicely framed in oak. Chocolate, ginger and green tobacco notes over deep, black cherry fruit dance on the supple palate, which shows fine fruit-to-acid balance. It's impressive, but kept from an even higher rating by ascendant oak, under which the handsome fruit struggles to maintain balance. This will be top-notch if the wood recedes in time."
