Cantine Lonardo, a benchmark producer in Campania, crafts Aglianico wines that showcase the grape’s power while maintaining balance and elegance. Their Irpinia Rosso is sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Taurasi’s volcanic soils, where cool nights help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The 2019 vintage, shaped by a long, even growing season, delivers a wine that is both expressive and built to age.

Black cherry, plum, and dried fig lead, layered with notes of tobacco, leather, and a touch of smoky volcanic minerality. The tannins are firm yet polished, giving the wine structure without overwhelming its vibrant acidity. While approachable with decanting, this Aglianico has the depth to evolve beautifully over the next decade. A perfect match for braised lamb, aged cheeses, or rich pasta dishes, this is a soulful, terroir-driven expression of southern Italy’s noble red grape.

Cantine Lonardo is one of those domaines that have been growing grapes—always organically—for generations, but only started bottling in recent times (1998). They continue to work organically and use traditional practices in the winery. To lovers of traditional Barolo, this will sound familiar: a very long maceration (beyond two months!), aging strictly in large neutral barrels, and wines of depth, power, structure, and soulfulness. The grapes are picked late and yet the alcohols are modest, resulting in wonderfully balanced wines.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"Remarkably fresh, the 2019 Aglianico impresses with a perfumed blend of violets and lavendar as vivid crushed blackberry and a dusting of white pepper come to the fore. It’s soft and enveloping, with masses of ripe wild berry fruits propelled by juicy acidity as a hint of sweet spice emerges toward the close. The 2019 finishes long and staining yet fresh and crisp leaving a gentle tug of fine tannin and hints of autumnal spice to fade slowly. This Aglianico could easily be mistaken for a Taurasi. It matured for two years in a combination of stainless steel and large, 25-hL barrels." -Vinous
