Flatiron Wine School Expanded Fall Class Series Announced!
This fall, we expand our popular Flatiron Wine School education program with no fewer than seven classes in September and October! Five of these classes are eligible for our "season pass" option, which gets you a five-pack at a special discount. (The other two are masterclasses on Burgundy with our own John Beaver Truax––see below!)
Most classes run approximately 90 minutes, include five wines, and cost $50. Check them out and find registration links below.
Classes often sell out, so don't wait to buy your ticket. Email Julia Burke with questions about Flatiron Wine School.

September 11: Canary Islands Deep Dive (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)
By popular demand, we're going deep with one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world. The Canary Islands boast unique local varieties, impossibly old vines and challenging landscapes, mineral-laced volcanic flavor and structure, and some of the most compelling people in the wine industry. We'll explore five examples from Tenerife, Lanzarote and beyond, and consider the impact we as consumers can have on the rare and fragile environment of these heavily touristed regions.
Taught by Flatiron's own Julia Burke, DWSET, this class will begin at 6:00pm on Monday, September 11 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited.
September 19: Pacific Northwest Soils into Wine (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)
It's clear from how fast our Oregon class sold out this summer: New Yorkers have caught on to the magic of the Pacific Northwest. Defined by two epic mountain ranges, vast desert, an ocean, and 18 million years of tectonic chaos, this magical region isn't just postcard-perfect––it's a thriving wine scene that still has room to soar, and it's right here on the continent we call home.
We're going under the hood (Mt. Hood glamor shots aside) to examine the fascinating terroir of Oregon and Washington through the lens of its great wines, like Pinot, Merlot, and Cab Franc, plus some less-expected treats. And because the PNW's tapestry of soil types is so magnificent and unique, we're going to do this through the lens of dirt.
Flatiron's own Julia Burke (DWSET) will explain how the incredibly diverse soils of this region translate into great wines, give you an insider's view of the PNW's exciting and challenging golden age, and share tips for getting the most out of these regions, whether at your table or on vacation. This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, September 19 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets here.
September 26: Bubbles Around the World (taught by Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, CSW)
Happily, many wine drinkers have already moved beyond the notion that sparkling wines are only for celebrations. In fact, they’re arguably the most versatile category of all wines! And you don’t need a Champagne budget to enjoy quality bubbles year-round. However, there are so many factors when it comes to sparkling wines, even experienced wine lovers can’t always pinpoint why they like the bubblies they like, or feel confident finding new favorites.
Flatiron team member and Wine Minx® Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, is thrilled to take you on a journey of all things fizzy. She’ll walk you through a brief history of this “accidental” creation, outline the different ways sparkling wines are made, cover global styles, delve into the best grape varieties, discuss the influence of dosage, aging potential, importance (or not) of terroir, vintage vs. non-vintage (hint, neither one is necessarily “better,”) and many more factors. Annie truly has a deep love of all things bubbly and is going to share five favorite bottles with you as she illuminates the wonders and joys of secondary fermentation.
This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, September 26 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets here.
October 3: Sherry, Your New Favorite Wine (taught by Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, CSW)
Many folks only think of Sherry as something a snooty dandy would sip on before dinner, or as a sickly-sweet cooking agent. Not at all! There is something delightfully transportive, entrancing, and just plain wonderful about this typically dry, savory, fortified wine from Spain. Its versatility makes it great for an aperitif, to add to cocktail creations, and even to pair with dinner. Flatiron team member and Wine Minx® Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, is determined to shine a glorious light on Sherry and turn any skeptics into passionate believers.
Even Sherry aficionados may be surprised at the fascinating history of this wine, its varied styles and production methods, and how producers are continuing to evolve the category, bringing a classic wine into the modern age. Among her numerous certifications, Annie is also a Certified Sherry Wine Specialist, so she is chomping at the bit to share this amazing category with you, along with five Sherries that will absolutely make the argument for it becoming your New Favorite Wine.
This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, October 3 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets here.
October 10: How To Enjoy Italy's Luxury Wines (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)
Do you buy the occasional Barolo or Barbaresco, but always wonder if you're drinking it a little too early (or worse, too late)? Are you still unsure what to think about Chianti's relatively new Gran Selezione category? Wondering what to even do with the sole bottle of Amarone in your cellar?
Italy's luxury wines—for our purposes, Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello di Montalcino, Super Tuscans, Chianti Classico Riserva Gran Selezione, and Amarone della Valpolicella—are like Frank Zappa albums: everyone who cares has a firm favorite, but it can feel like people spending more time arguing about how to collect them than actually enjoying them.
That's a shame, because with a few exceptions, these wines deliver amazing value when you consider they're Italy's answer to Grand Cru Burgundy, Côte-Rotie and classed Bordeaux. An Italian wine lover of 15 years who has traveled in Piedmont and Tuscany, Flatiron's Julia Burke (DWSET) doesn't collect bottles —she collects tips from restaurant owners, winemakers, hospitality managers, and their grandmas on how to pair these great wines, when to drink them, and how to think about them as a part of your life and table rather than museum pieces. Let's taste them together (with a few light pairings, naturalmente) and make a pact to never let friends put Barolo in a blender.
This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, October 10 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets here.
Burgundy Masterclasses with John Beaver Truax
Burgundy isn't for the faint of heart. Intimidating both for its staggering top-level prices and complex site classifications, yet captivating like no other wine region in the world, it's a region that demands expert guidance whether you're a novice or experienced wine lover.
Luckily, our own John Beaver Truax has a Burgundy story, a recommendation and a favorite bottle for just about every occasion, and for the very first time in our history, he's offering to share his lifetime's worth of knowledge and insight with Flatiron Wine School. We're splitting his Burgundy masterclass into two sessions, tackling white and then red Burgundy with a guided tasting and discussion of how to understand, collect and enjoy the world's most enigmatic wines.
The White Burgundy class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, October 17 and the Red Burgundy class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, October 24. Classes will run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste several wines chosen by Beaver. Wines discussed in class may be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Due to the content of this class, it is not part of the discounted five-class season pass.
