A. Margaine is a grower Champagne house in Villers-Marmery, a Premier Cru village on the Montagne de Reims known for Chardonnay. The Margaine family has grown grapes here since 1905, and Arnaud Margaine represents the fourth generation running the estate. The domaine farms 8 hectares, all in Villers-Marmery, using sustainable practices with minimal treatments. CuvĂ©e Le CaractĂšre M is their prestige bottling—100% Chardonnay from the oldest vines (planted 1964), fermented in a mix of stainless steel and oak barrels, aged a minimum of 4 years on the lees. Low dosage (around 6 g/L) preserves the wine's tension and minerality. Expect toasted brioche and white flower aromatics, a creamy mousse with fine bubbles, and a long chalky finish that speaks to Villers-Marmery's distinctive terroir. Grower Champagne at its finest. Serve with oysters, aged ComtĂ©, or simply on its own.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The NV Brut Le CaractĂšre M is 95% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir based on 2013, with a perpetual reserve dating back to 2002 that represents 75% of the wine. It is the richest and creamiest of the Margaine Champagnes. Dried flowers, coffee, hazelnut, spice, dried orchard fruit and tangerine oil all show the natural richness the older vintages bring to this compelling blend. Dosage is 4-5 grams per liter. Disgorged: September, 2018."

Wine Spectator

91 points

"A sleek blanc de blancs Champagne, with firming flavors of ripe melon, toast and roasted almond along with crunchy acidity. A fine aperitif style, lively and well-knit, with a creamy mousse. Disgorged September 2018. Drink now through 2023. 166 cases made."

More about A Margaine

Mathilde Margaine is the fifth generation and first woman to lead the family domaine in Villers-Marmery—basically the Chardonnay island in a sea of Pinot Noir. Her family started making wine in 1796 (yes, 1796) and today she and her dad work just 6.5 hectares with obsessive care: blocked malolactic fermentations to preserve brightness, precise plot-by-plot work, and a "Special Club" membership since 1976. These are wines that taste refreshingly pure, not trying to show off.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
