"It’s hard not to commence a tasting note on this wine in the same way as I did that on its 2014 predecessor: 'A haunting nose ....' Here we have buddleia, violets and thyme; white peach, mirabelle and red currant, with intimations of the fruit pit piquancy and crushed stone anticipating the glowing sharpness and interaction of fruit and stone that ensue on a silken palate. The superbly-sustained finish displays striking transparency to undulating, interactive layers of floral, coolingly green herbal, fruity and crystalline mineral elements. An influx of sweet-saline shrimp shell reduction serves for saliva-inducement, while a touch of white pepper enhances the impression of invigoration and, along with the aforementioned piquancy, serves as a sort of fermata extending the last harmonious notes of this impressive exercise in Riesling counterpoint." -Vinous

"The 2015 (Niederhäuser) Hermannshöhle Riesling GG is cool and smoky on the nose--very clear and aristocratic, like always--with lemon and fine stony flavors, but also hints of pineapple, herbs and flint stones. What purity, depth and finesse there is here! On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, intense and elegant Riesling that's bottled only to be enjoyed in the next decade. It is deep, complex and mystical, and the texture is ripe and round--whereas the minerals are still sorting themselves out. This wine is still in the cellar, preparing itself to shine one day. All I can do today is testify to its complexity and depth, as well as its vitality and lemon freshness from the slate terroir."

"The hardest thing when describing Dönnhoff’s 2015 Hermannshöhle is to refrain from an accumulation of superlatives. The ripe fruit of local orchards growing along the banks of a crystal-clear stream flowing over rocks and stones in the pure air of a cool Indian summer morning--well, there is more veritas in this vino than today’s nature can throw at you even with its best efforts. Let’s just say: purity, minerality, vibrancy, complexity."

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
