Ampodium is the new name for Rostaing’s flagship Côte-Rôtie, formerly known as “Classique.” It blends fruit from nearly a dozen top vineyard sites—including La Landonne, Viallière, and Côte Blonde—to produce a Syrah that’s both expressive in youth and deeply cellar-worthy.

The 2022 vintage was warm and generous, but Rostaing’s light hand keeps the wine fresh and lifted. Whole-cluster fermentation and aging in mostly older oak barrels highlight the wine’s aromatic profile: crushed blackberries, violets, black olive, smoked meat, and garrigue. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and precise, with fine tannins, savory energy, and a long, mineral finish.

This is Côte-Rôtie for purists—complex but not showy, structured yet graceful, and always a reference point for Syrah lovers. Drink from 2025 onward or cellar for 10–15 years.

Rostaing inherited prize parcels in Cote Rotie from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and uncle, Marius Gentaz. He went on to become a legend of his own. His son, Pierre, took over in 2015 and pushed the domaine in a more traditional direction. The high quality has gotten even higher.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The taut 2022 Côte-Rôtie Ampodium reveals black cherry, red plum, crushed violets and a touch of cedar on the nose. Medium-bodied with concentrated flavors, the 2022 concludes persistently with an elegant finish. More tannic than the 2023 tasted alongside, it will benefit from at least two more years in bottle." -Vinous
