Pichler almost single-handedly spearheaded the Austrian wine renaissance in the 1980s, crafting Smaragd wines of such individual vineyard character and concentration that they redefined what Wachau Riesling could be. The seventh-generation estate farms steep, hand-worked terraces of gneiss, granite, and slate along the Danube—terroir formed by tectonic collisions 350 million years ago. The Kellerberg Smaragd represents the pinnacle of Austrian Riesling: rich tropical fruit, tangerine, blossom honey, and dark minerality within a complex bouquet, underpinned by the concentration and structure that the Smaragd designation demands. The 2009 vintage delivered wines of luscious depth and aging potential that extends well beyond two decades.
