Among the earliest single-vineyard Barolos—Pio Cesare introduced the Ornato cru from their Serralunga d'Alba holdings in 1985, helping pioneer the concept of terroir-driven bottling in Piedmont. Founded in 1881 by entrepreneur Cesare Pio, the estate passed through five generations of family stewardship and now manages 173 acres across Barolo and Barbaresco's finest sites. The Ornato vineyard in Serralunga sits on some of the region's oldest, most tannic limestone and clay soils, producing Nebbiolo of exceptional structure requiring extended aging. One hundred percent Nebbiolo, fermented in stainless steel with extended maceration, then aged in a blend of French barriques and large Slavonian oak casks—honoring Piedmontese tradition while incorporating modern refinement. The classic 2010 vintage—cool and long, with harvest extending into late October—produced wines of floral elegance, fresh acidity, and powerful tannic architecture. Cherry, tar, spice, and rose petal with a long mineral finish. Entering its prime now.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2010 Barolo Ornato is quite possibly the best wine I have ever tasted from Pio Cesare's hillside site in Serralunga. Exotic, beguiling and constantly changing in the glass, the 2010 Ornato races across the palate with compelling nuance, brightness and energy. Red stone fruits, crushed rocks, orange peel, spices and white pepper all blossom from the glass in an exotic Barolo full of allure. The 2010 captures all of the mystique of what Serralunga is all about. This is a fabulous showing from Pio Boffa and the team at Pio Cesare." -Antonio Galloni

"Executed in a bolder style, the 2010 Barolo Ornato is born in the Serralunga d’Alba township where Nebbiolo tends to show more structure, power and density. Indeed, the richness smoothness and overall opulence of the 2010 vintage is irresistible. This is an elegant and articulate wine that boasts a long aromatic range, spanning from berry fruit to ethereal balsam oil. Yet, all the while, it shows the spicy endnotes and softness of barrel aging. Barolo Ornato is aged in new barrique (70%) and large casks. It’s almost ready to drink out of the gate. Drink: 2015-2028." -Monica Larner

"Discreet nuances of vanilla and toast accent the core of cherry, raspberry and floral flavors in this elegant, yet firm Barolo. Beautifully balanced, complex and long, with leather, tar and mineral elements emerging on the finish."

"From one of Barolo's most storied houses, this concentrated wine opens with aromas of toasted oak, espresso, red berry, leather and baking spices. The palate offers up sweet oak, vanilla, toasted notes, mocha, roasted coffee bean and juicy black cherry alongside bracing tannins." -Kerin O'Keefe
