Bernard Faurie represents the old guard of Hermitage—a traditionalist whose tiny 1.7-hectare holdings include vines over a century old. Until 1980, he worked in a factory while his father tended cherry trees and small vineyard plots; the elder Faurie's winemaking sparked a passion that produced some of the Northern Rhône's purest expressions. Faurie employs whole-cluster fermentation, foot-treading, horse plowing, and aging in old demi-muids, bottling without filtration. The Greffieux-Bessards cuvée blends fruit from two of Hermitage's most revered lieu-dits, offering an expression that is more suave and floral than his Bessards-Méal bottling. The 2009 is a celebrated vintage—warm and generous—that matches this wine's natural elegance with depth of terroir.

Fourth-generation keeper of family vines in Hermitage since 1935, Bernard Faurie does everything by hand—including crushing grapes by foot. He uses 100% whole-bunch fermentation, eschews chemical weed killers (favoring horse plowing), and ages in oak ranging from new to 6-year-old 600-liter demi-muids. His Syrah is a masterclass in patience and restraint, producing reds and a white Hermitage Blanc from old-vine Marsanne.
