The red label is Bruno Giacosa's signal to the world that a vintage has reached the highest expression of its vineyard. From the south-facing upper parcels of Falletto in Serralunga d'Alba—a site Giacosa acquired in the early 1980s—this Riserva spent three to four years in large French oak botti after an extended maceration of up to thirty days. Giacosa, who began cellar work at thirteen and never attended enology school, was legendary for refusing to bottle wines that fell short of his exacting standards, selling lesser vintages off in bulk. The 2001 met every criterion: it is monumental in structure, with towering depth and multi-dimensional complexity that unfolds over hours in the glass. Expect dark fruit, tar, rose petal, and iron-rich minerality supported by a formidable tannic scaffold. This is among the pinnacle vintages alongside the 1999 and 2004—a wine built for decades, still gaining momentum more than twenty years on.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 98
"A big, dramatic wine, the 2001 Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba is utterly captivating. It is at once sensual and powerful, conveying all the complexity that only Nebbiolo is capable of. Deeply pitched balsamic and spice notes build as this dark, structured Serralunga Barolo shows off all its brooding intensity. Magnificent." -Antonio Galloni

"Irony minerals, pressed violet and dark cocoa are at the fore with sweet moist earth and mace on the palate. It has filled out and shows more richness now, though somehow remains ethereally weighted. Deeply profound with endless layers and lingering porcini, it wields a steady grip and appetising sour cherry acidity. I have been lucky enough to try this on half a dozen occasions, from its initial release until I opened my last bottle a few months ago. Still very much alive and singing."

"This is a beautiful, seductive wine with power yet great finesse. It's full-bodied, with a massive silky mouthfeel and lovely raspberry and strawberry character. It's very, very long. All in harmony. Giacosa is a master."
