What is this wine?
Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona is one of Montalcino’s most respected family estates, farming organically on the southeastern slopes near Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Pianrosso is their flagship single-vineyard Brunello, sourced from 12 hectares of Sangiovese Grosso planted on galestro and marl soils. In only the best vintages, a Riserva bottling is made—the Santa Caterina d’Oro. The 2010 vintage is legendary in Montalcino, hailed for its balance, concentration, and long aging potential.
Why get this wine?
This is a collector’s Brunello at its peak: a Riserva from a benchmark vineyard, in a 100-point vintage, crafted by one of the region’s most admired estates. It represents the pinnacle of Ciacci’s production—limited, highly sought after, and built for decades of graceful aging.
What does this wine taste like?
Deep and complex, with layers of dark cherry, plum, and blackberry framed by rose petal, tobacco, leather, and spice. Full-bodied with finely woven tannins, vibrant acidity, and an expansive, persistent finish. At this stage, primary fruit is giving way to savory, tertiary elegance.
When should you drink this wine?
Now through 2040. Decant 2–3 hours if drinking soon to fully unlock its aromatics. Perfect alongside bistecca alla Fiorentina, game meats, or aged Pecorino.
