From the exceptional 2004 vintage—widely regarded as the beginning of Montalcino’s finest modern run—this Riserva from Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona has spent over two decades evolving into something magnificent. The Pianrosso vineyard, an old-vine parcel on the estate’s prized slopes, yields the fruit for this single-vineyard Riserva aged 48 months in large Slavonian oak casks before extended bottle maturation. The Bianchini family, who inherited the 543-acre property in 1985 from Countess Elda Piccolomini d’Aragona (descendant of Pope Pius II), have transformed these historic holdings into one of Montalcino’s leading estates. Now at over twenty years of age, the wine reveals the magnificent secondary complexity of great Brunello: dark cherry giving way to leather, spice, underbrush, and minerals. Decant two to three hours before serving.
