J.L. Vergnon is a five-hectare grower estate in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger—one of Champagne's most prestigious Grand Cru villages—now in its third and fourth generations under Didier and Clément Vergnon. The MSNL bottling combines fruit from two contiguous old-vine lieux-dits: seventy percent Les Chétillons and thirty percent Mussettes, both on Le Mesnil's legendary chalk soils. Winemaker Christophe Constant, who joined in 2002, ferments in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, preserving the razor-sharp acidity and mineral purity that define great Le Mesnil Champagne. Extended aging on the lees—over eight years—builds extraordinary autolytic complexity without softening the wine's essential precision. Extra Brut dosage keeps the focus squarely on Chardonnay and chalk. The 2014 vintage, initially underestimated, has revealed itself as a vintage of impressive structure and acid-driven tension. A Champagne of remarkable mineral depth and intellectual complexity.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
