Ziereisen, Heugumber Gutedel (Chasselas), 2022 is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.

Named "Grasshopper" for reasons lost to time, the Heugumber vineyard produces one of Markgräflerland's most overlooked treasures: Gutedel, a grape so delicate and fine that most producers treat it as everyday refreshment. Hanspeter Ziereisen treats it as a philosophical statement. Nine months on fine lees in traditional neutral fuder (large wooden vessels) transforms what could be a simple white into something mineral-driven and architectural. The limestone soils beneath contribute pronounced salinity—not oceanic but rather a subtle grip on the palate that invites you to drink deeper. Citric fruit, green apple, stone minerals, and a whisper of herbal complexity create a wine of unexpected sophistication: elegant yet food-worthy, crisp yet textured. This is Chasselas as few know it—serious, contemplative, and endlessly versatile at the table.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 90
"Ziereisen's 2022 Heugumber is intense in color and displays fully ripe and dense aromas of yellow fruit intermingled with yeasty and limestone nuances on the remarkably complex nose that clearly represents another warm vintage yet keeps its focus. Very elegant and saline on the palate, this well-balanced Chasselas is long and structured and reveals stimulating citric fruit and fine grip on the aromatic and stimulating finish. 10.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024."

Jancis Robinson

"Sour-citrus aroma. More aromatic than most Chasselas. Tight and almost lean on the palate. Salty, fresh and surprisingly long. Still tastes like a very, very young wine."

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
