"Close to perfection, the saturated blue/black-colored 1997 Maya exhibits complex aromatics of creme de cassis, smoke, spice box, iron, and espresso. The wine has a viscous texture, huge, concentrated, ripe fruit, remarkable body, and a seamless, multi-layered finish. The tannin, acidity, and alcohol are all beautifully integrated. This is profound stuff!"

"Intense and tannic, with a dry, leathery streak to the currant, mint, sage and berry notes. Tight and firm, it hasn't softened much or gained much complexity. Yet it's not tired. Tannins are the big issue. Two other bottles were unimpressive. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot."
