The legend in Naples is that, as Christ bewept the fall of Lucifer, his tears fell on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius and gave special inspiration to the vines there. The wines certainly have a ton of character! Their labels depict one of the eighteenth-century eruptions of the volcano, and the wines are loaded with minerals and sea breeze.
The Matrone family has farmed these fertile lower slopes of the mountain for over two hundred years, but it was only recently that cousins Andrea and Francesco resurrected their grandfather's old winery and put it to use. Working organically, they farm just over 2ha of vines at several different elevations and equally divided between red (Piedirosso, Aglianico, and Scascinoso) and white (Falanghina & Caprettone) and produce under 10,000 bottles per year.
