Cappellano’s 2011 Barolo Otin Fiorin – Pie Rupestris is a wine that beautifully captures the strength and grace of Barolo. Sourced from a historic vineyard, this Barolo is a refined expression of Nebbiolo, showcasing layers of complexity and structure with each sip.

The nose reveals an inviting mix of ripe dark fruit—black cherries and plums—intertwined with earthy notes of tobacco, leather, and a hint of licorice. Subtle spice and floral hints add depth and nuance to the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with firm tannins that provide a solid backbone while allowing the fruit flavors to shine. The acidity is well-balanced, offering freshness and lift, while the finish is long and elegant, leaving behind lingering flavors of dark fruit, earth, and spice.

This Barolo pairs beautifully with roasted meats, truffled dishes, or aged cheeses, making it a versatile and elegant choice for a variety of rich dishes. While the 2011 vintage is already drinking well, its structure suggests it will continue to evolve and develop even more complexity with time in the cellar.

Serralunga is extreme. No village in Barolo produces wines of greater structure and longevity. We understand that has to do with its soils, as no village in Barolo has a greater concentration of limestone. When dealing with such a lion of a terroir, it must be tempting to find a whip that will tame the beast. For a wine-maker, that could be barriques, or short macerations, or roto-fermentors. Those are the short-cuts. Augusto Cappellano, like his father Teobaldo before him, does not take those short cuts. Partly, that's because he is just fine with structure and longevity. That is the natural product of Serralunga's special terroir, after all. Partly, it's because Augusto's extremely high-quality farming (the family has only four hectares so they can apply their natural farming methods assiduously to each and every vine) ensures that the grapes' tannins ripen properly, avoiding any of the harsh, bitter qualities that for years many assumed were also "natural."
