Built for the long haul—this 2016 spent eight years in large oak casks. Princess Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa has led this medieval Tuscan estate since 1968, creating wines that Galloni calls "some of the most age-worthy in Italy." Santacroce blends equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, offering the structure to cellar 20+ years while drinking beautifully now. Indigenous fermentations, traditional winemaking, 55+ years of fearless stewardship.

"The 2016 Santa Croce is the estate's blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon that spent close to eight years in cask during a time when proprietor Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa was ill and some lots sat undisturbed in cellar for extended periods. Dark red fruit, rose petal, spice and menthol build in the glass. Most suprisingly, the 2016 is shockingly fresh for a wine of its age . This is a great, great wine. It's not Sangiovese, it's not Cabernet Sauvignon, it's not a blend. It’s simply Castell'in Villa at its most profound." —Antonio Galloni

More about Castell'in Villa

Principessa Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa is the thoughtful, philosophical driving force behind Castell'in Villa in Castelnuovo Berardenga at the south end of Chianti Classico. She traveled to Argentina to study Malbec, proving her commitment to understanding wine globally before refining her own approach locally. Old-fashioned farming, indigenous yeast fermentations, aging in neutral old oak—these Sangiovese-based Chianti Classico and Riserva age beautifully and reward patience. This is fine, traditionally made Chianti from someone who takes her time to get things right.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, plum, spice, earthy minerality. Medium-full body with rounded tannins and complexity.

Vincent Laval's family has been in the village of Cumières for as long as the village started keeping records hundreds of years ago. Laval’s two hectares are in Cumières on the northern bank of the Marne, just a few kilometers west of Épernay. The vineyards face south/southeast, and receive ample sun exposure. Cumières is generally the first village in Champagne to ripen. Though Cumières is considered part of the Montagne de Reims, it’s right on the cusp of the Vallée de Marne, which means that Pinot Meunier also finds a home here.

Georges Laval converted the vineyards to organic in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Vincent’s approach in the cellar is hands off: base wines ferment spontaneously in neutral barrel, and are treated with minimal sulfur. Laval bottles quite late, which means that he’s essentially made a finished wine before second fermentation begins. The wines are, almost without exception, bottled Brut Nature; however the ripeness of the terroir in conjunction with impeccable farming mean that these wines find exquisite balance without dosage.
