When in the market for serious, classically made Bordeaux that doesn't ask you to spend a fortune, it's really hard to beat Cantemerle. A 5th Growth in the 1855 classification with terroir that some experts believe deserves a higher ranking, the château sits at the southern edge of the Haut-Médoc near the Margaux border on excellent gravel soils. What makes Cantemerle stand apart is what they refuse to do: no malolactic fermentation in barrique, no inflation of new oak, no reduction of Cabernet Sauvignon in favor of something softer and more immediately palatable. They still use concrete vats for much of the work — a holdout position in a region that has largely abandoned the tradition. The 2019 is a superb vintage across Bordeaux, and Cantemerle's traditional hand shows beautifully here.

Cantemerle is a 5th growth, located in Haut-Medoc with vineyards very close to Margaux. And, like a classic, mature Marguax, Cantemerle shows a wonderfully complex, spicy bouquet with age: tobacco, smoke, and mineral-infused cherry notes fill the nose before you even get close to the glass.
