Sourced from a 5-hectare walled vineyard at the foot of the Château de Puligny-Montrachet, this Chardonnay embodies terroir generosity from deep silt and clay soils. The parcel serves as the domaine's biodynamic testing ground, with no neighbors and complete enclosure allowing optimal natural farming. The 2023 vintage is a shining example—sunny yet balanced with irresistible aromas of indulgent fruit. On the palate, it's pale and fresh with electric white stone fruit character, displaying apple and fresh plum with pleasant length. Remarkably well-placed despite its village AOC designation.

"A more floral-infused nose speaks mostly of various white orchard fruit aromas that are trimmed in barely noticeable wood. The succulent, round and delicious flavors also deliver good length on the equally well-balanced finale. This too is good for its level and worth a look."

"The 2023 Bourgogne Le Clos du Château was matured in 500 and 600-liter barrels for 11 months on the lees. It has an effervescent bouquet with yellow plum scents unfurling in the glass. The palate is well balanced with hints of tropical fruit matched by the acidity. It is nicely composed on the simple finish." —Neal Martin

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

VineyardThe five hectares vineyard of Le Clos du Chateau sits in front of the Chateau de Puligny and is entirely enclosed by walls (a true clos). Remarkably situated on the border of Puligny vineyards, this terroir has been managed by De Montille since 2002 and was eventually purchased by the domaine in 2012.OrientationEast-facingSoilDeep soil consisting of silt and clay.ViticultureCertified organic, practicing biodynamic. As there are no neighbors and the vineyard is completely enclosed, it is the ideal site for farming biodynamically since outside chemicals and sprays will not inflitrate the vineyard. It is for this reason that the Clos de Chateau is home to all of De Montille's biodynamic trials and experiments.VinificationFermented in demi-muids. Regarding sulfur, whites have the following: 75-100 mg/l total SO2, 30-35 mg/l free SO2.AgingAged one year in demi-muids, then blended and aged another 5 months in stainless steel.
