Few names in Burgundy set collectors scrambling like Roumier, and few wines are as rare or as sought-after as Christophe Roumier's Bonnes Mares. This Grand Cru straddles the border of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, and Roumier blends its two contrasting soils — the pale, marly terres blanches above and the clay-rich terres rouges below — into one wine that is at once powerful and impossibly nuanced. Made the old way, with native yeasts and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it's produced in tiny quantities and allocated down to the bottle. The 2023 is an infant with decades ahead of it. This is a wine to cellar, not to open tonight.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is comprised of four different cuvées this year. Some fruit was declassified and blended with the Bourgogne Rouge. The fermenters were full this vintage. The bouquet has fabulous delineation, with subtle mineral/crushed stone infusing the blackberry and blueberry fruit. The palate is supremely well balanced with wonderful structure and tension from the start. It's classic in style, though it will need a few years to absorb the 75% whole bunch. It will be worth the wait." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is shaping up brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries and mulberries mingled with blood orange, musky spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, cool and layered, it's rich but mineral, with an enveloping core of fruit, lively acids and sweet, powdery tannins. As ever, this is a broad-shouldered wine, but it remains impeccably balanced." —William Kelley

Save it for a special roast — rack of lamb, wild game, or truffled dishes once it has aged a decade or more.

Tasting Profile

Deep, mineral and powerful, yet finely detailed and balanced. Tightly wound now; needs years to unfurl.
