Eric Rodez, Champagne Brut Cuvee des Grands Vintages (Base 2016), NV

When a former Krug enologist returned to manage his family's Champagne house, continuity met ambition. Eric Rodez ferments the vast majority of his blend in barrels—a commitment to texture—while reserve wines spanning multiple vintages add layered complexity to this Grand Cru cuvée. Pinot Noir's power (the dominant grape) is balanced by Chardonnay's elegance, restrained malolactic fermentation, and just 1.5 g/L dosage. Biodynamically farmed from a family rooted in Ambonnay since 1757.

"(70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, all barrel-fermented; 4 g/l dosage; made from fruit grown in Ambonnay and aged on its lees for eight years before disgorgement; L09-13): Bright yellow-gold. An intriguingly perfumed nose evokes poached pear, orange zest, sweet butter and honey, along with a smoky quality and a chalky mineral overtone. Chewy, very deep citrus and orchard fruit flavors are complicated by suggestions of toasted brioche, white truffle and candied fig. Finishes very long and smoky, with resonating floral and mineral qualities. I'd serve this complex Champagne, which comprises wines from 15 different vintages dating back to 1995, with an indulgent, buttery poultry or shellfish dish." —Josh Raynolds

"Disgorged in April 2020 with three grams per liter dosage, the latest rendition of the NV Brut Cuvée des Grand Vintages wafts from the glass with inviting aromas of pear, toasted almonds, dried white flowers, honeycomb, peach and nougat. Full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and enveloping, with ripe but racy acids, a pillowy mousse and a nicely layered core, it's already quite expressive despite its recent disgorgement, but I suspect it will show even more depth and dimension with another year or two on cork." —William Kelley

"Behind the somewhat eccentric multilingual name and a paterfamilias (Eric) who always wears the most eccentric glasses, we have one of the great multi-vintage cuvées, with all but 25% of the blend coming from reserve wine. Dosed low at 2.5g/L, the wine is unerringly complex, boasting bright red fruit with a savoury undertow, then clear citric acidity adding linearity and a rich biscuity core, courtesy the maturity of the components, all of which are now harmoniously integrated."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
