The Domaine Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Rouge 2020 is a beautifully crafted wine that reflects the depth and elegance of one of Beaune’s most esteemed Premier Cru vineyards. Les Grèves, known for its gentle slope and well-draining sandy limestone soils, is a hallmark of the appellation, producing wines that balance richness with finesse. Domaine Michel Lafarge, a beacon of traditional and biodynamic winemaking, meticulously tends these vines, capturing the essence of the terroir. The 2020 vintage, with its warm growing season, resulted in wines of remarkable concentration, vibrancy, and aging potential.

On the nose, this wine reveals an inviting bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, and cranberries, accented by floral notes of peony and violets. Subtle layers of spice, cedar, and earthy undertones lend complexity and depth. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and well-structured, with fine-grained tannins and a lively acidity that enhances its precision. The limestone soils impart a mineral backbone that carries through to a long, refined finish, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and harmony.

This cuvée pairs beautifully with roasted game birds, herb-crusted pork loin, or wild mushroom dishes. While it can be enjoyed in its youth with decanting, the Domaine Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Rouge 2020 will reward 8–12 years of cellaring, evolving into an even more complex and nuanced expression. This wine is a testament to the Lafarge family’s dedication to authenticity and the timeless appeal of Beaune’s Premier Cru vineyards, offering both immediate pleasure and exceptional aging potential.

Domaine Michel Lafarge

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.
