The Domaine Forey Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée “Menhir” 2022 is a refined and innovative expression of Burgundy, blending the rich traditions of Vosne-Romanée with forward-thinking craftsmanship. Sourced from 14 parcels of Pinot Noir vines planted between 1942 and 1974, this wine reflects the elegance and depth that define the appellation. Régis Forey, renowned for his thoughtful approach to viticulture and winemaking, incorporates aging in tronconic wooden foudres—a nod to the standing “Menhir” stones of Europe—to address modern climate challenges and ensure balance and freshness in this cuvée.

On the nose, the wine opens with a seductive bouquet of black cherries, ripe raspberries, and red currants, intertwined with floral notes of violets and subtle hints of clove and spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and harmonious, offering juicy red fruit flavors supported by fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity. The innovative foudre aging imparts a polished texture and a mineral-driven, lingering finish that highlights its terroir.

This wine pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted duck breast, coq au vin, or mushroom risotto, where its freshness and structure can shine. While accessible in its youth for its bright fruit and supple tannins, the Domaine Forey Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée “Menhir” 2022 will evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years, gaining additional complexity and nuance. It is a compelling testament to Régis Forey’s dedication to crafting wines that honor Burgundy’s traditions while embracing innovation.

Regis Forey makes a range of traditional, old school Pinot Noir in the heart of Vosne-Romanée. His domaine is a total of 10 hectares and includes holdings from Nuits-St-Georges to Morey-St-Denis, and include some top 1er crus in Vosne. But the wines (and Regis himself) are not flashy, and indeed they can take careful cellaring to unlock their full potential.

These are the very qualities that first drew famed importer Neal Rosenthal to the estate back in 1982. Indeed this was one of the first Burgundy producers in a portfolio that is now famous for a slew of top-notch domaines and classic wines. What drew Neal to this domaine are the same qualities that his entire portfolio exemplifies: pure, unadulterated expressions of terroir.

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

In recent vintages Régis Forey has begun ageing a portion of his Vosne village wine in tronconic wood foudres, shaped similarly to the Menhir standing stones that stretch across Celtic areas of Europe. In today’s warming climate, Burgundy’s average cellar temperatures are higher than in eras past, and vessels such as these counteract the accelerated development these warmer cellars foster.
