Benoît Déhu’s Champagne “La Rue des Noyers Rosé de Saignée” Extra Brut NV, based on the 2020 vintage, is a striking example of Déhu’s dedication to biodynamic practices and terroir-driven winemaking in the Marne Valley. This rosé Champagne is crafted using the saignée method, where the juice is drawn off after a short maceration with the grape skins, intensifying both color and flavor. Made exclusively from Pinot Meunier grown in the single vineyard of “La Rue des Noyers,” this Champagne highlights the vineyard’s unique microclimate and soil, which lend complexity and depth to the final wine.

The nose reveals vibrant aromas of wild raspberries, red currants, and hints of blood orange, accompanied by delicate floral and earthy undertones. On the palate, “La Rue des Noyers Rosé de Saignée” is both rich and lively, with red berry and stone fruit flavors layered over a taut acidity. The Extra Brut dosage enhances its crisp, mineral-driven finish, adding focus to the wine’s inherent freshness and elegance.

This Champagne pairs beautifully with dishes like duck breast, charcuterie, or even savory vegetarian fare with earthy elements, which highlight its depth and structure. With the 2020 base, the wine captures both the energy of a young vintage and the refined complexity typical of Déhu’s wines, offering a Champagne that is both expressive and unforgettable.

Benoit is a Meunier specialist, working his family's vineyards on the western edge of the Vallée de la Marne. Starting in 2011, he started bottling wines under his own name from a single parcel called La Rue des Noyers -- 100% Pinot Meunier, farmed biodynamically, and ploughed mostly by horse. In 2015, he started blending some of this PM with Pinot Noir from a nearby plot, and calls it Initiation.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
