Domaine Michel Lafarge is one of Volnay's most revered estates, certified biodynamic since 2000 and known for producing some of Burgundy's most elegant, age-worthy wines. Their "L'Exception" Passetoutgrain turns the often-humble regional appellation into something remarkable. Passetoutgrain is Burgundy's traditional blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, typically requiring only one-third Pinot, but Lafarge's version is a 50/50 blend from their holdings in and around Volnay—hence the "exception." The wine is made with the same care as their village and premier cru bottlings. The result is surprisingly serious: structured enough to age, but with Gamay's bright fruit adding lift and freshness. One of the best values in Burgundy from one of its finest producers.

It has wonderful transparency on the nose: red cherries mixed with raspberry. The palate leans more towards the Pinot Noir, with fine delineation, gentle grip and ample tension on the finish. Michel Lafarge is Burgundy royalty—one of the greatest names in the game. His Aligoté comes from nearly 90-year-old vines (almost extinct elsewhere in Burgundy), planted in 1937. Whole-cluster pressed, fermented in steel with indigenous yeasts, aged in older barrels. It opens with honeysuckle and yuzu and tastes like centuries of tradition in a glass.
