There’s almost nothing new about Laura Lorenzo’s Daterra Viticultores—her vines range from 80-120 years of age, the grapes are native to Galicia and have been used in winemaking for eons, and she herself has been committed to her craft from the tender age of 16.

She is one of several winemakers breathing new life into Galicia, a region more commonly associated with crisp Albariño than the obscure, indigenous varieties she prefers. After a decade abroad, making wine in South Africa and Argentina, she returned to Spain to Dominio de Bibei, the pioneering estate that put fine Ribeira Sacra wine on the map. After a decade there, she left to start her own domaine.

She’s only been making wine under her own name since 2014, but there’s incredible mastery in everything she does: from sustainable, minimal-impact farming to intuitive and impeccable winemaking, Laura’s wines dance on the palate with an indescribable spark. They’re truly alive, vibrant with crunchy fruit and tons of minerality, thanks to the highly granitic soils in which the grapes are grown.

Her wines are a love letter to the distinct terroir of Galicia. She sources grapes from the steep slopes surrounding her home village of Manzaneda, where the salty Atlantic breeze meets a warm, contintental climate. There is more than a hint of this maritime influence in her wines, and ample freshness.
