Warmer and sunnier than its predecessor, 2019 delivered copious spring rainfall followed by a long, even warm summer—conditions that allowed Cabernet Franc to achieve fuller ripeness while maintaining acidity. Matthiasson’s Phoenix Vineyard responded with richer, darker fruit character while the old vines’ tannins remained soft and resolved. At seven years of age, this wine shows the benefit of warm-vintage ripeness without sacrificing elegance: the darker fruit (blackberry, plum) provides richness, the softer tannins integrate easily, and the structure remains balanced. The vintage’s warmer profile contrasts pleasantly with the cool precision of 2018, showing how Matthiasson’s clonal selection and old-vine vineyard character shine across different seasonal conditions. The wine carries freshness despite warmth—evidence of meticulous harvest timing and restrained winemaking. This is a Cabernet Franc for drinking now, though the structure suggests five to eight more years will only deepen its complexity.
