Few wines have done more to define modern South African fine wine than Meerlust’s “Rubicon.” First produced in 1980, it was a bold statement: a Cabernet-led Bordeaux blend from Stellenbosch that could stand beside the greats of the Old World. Over 40 vintages later, Rubicon remains a flagship of elegance, structure, and longevity—crafted with the same uncompromising standards by the Myburgh family.
The 2020 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with a touch of Petit Verdot, all estate-grown on the cooler, ocean-influenced soils of Meerlust’s historic property just five kilometers from False Bay. It’s aged in French oak (70% new), with a classic profile: blackcurrant, plum, graphite, and cedar, framed by fine tannins and balanced acidity.
What makes Rubicon unique is its restraint and polish—this isn’t a blockbuster Cape red, but something more Bordelais in character: elegant, layered, and built for the long haul. It drinks beautifully now with decanting, but will reward cellaring for 10–15+ years.
If you love Left Bank Bordeaux, Ridge Monte Bello, or serious Bolgheri blends, Rubicon delivers similar gravitas at a far more accessible price.
Serve with roast lamb, steak au poivre, or mushroom Wellington, and don’t hesitate to tuck a few bottles away.
