Roagna’s Pira Vecchie Viti isn’t just a special cuvée—it’s a deep cut from one of Barolo’s great crus, made from some of the oldest vines in Castiglione Falletto. Most were planted in the 1930s, and the resulting fruit is pure, concentrated, and fiercely structured. No flashy winemaking, no new oak—just patience, precision, and outrageous vine material.

The 2019 vintage was tailor-made for a wine like this: cool, long, and full of detail. You get all the Nebbiolo hallmarks—rose petals, red fruit, licorice, and smoky spice—but it’s the tension and clarity that really stand out. This wine doesn’t shout; it simmers.

And in magnum, it’s a brilliant play for the cellar. Longer evolution, more nuance, and serious wow-factor when it hits the table. If you’re building a Barolo collection that leans traditional, this is a must.

Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The bio-sphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.

Antonio Galloni

AG 99
"The Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti 2019 is one of the most captivating and beautiful wines I have ever tasted here. Interestingly, it is more open than the pure Pira because it is perfumed and sweeter on the inside. Candy sugar, rose petals, mint, orange peel and kirsch rush across the palate. The 2019 is simply stunning. There's not much more to say." -Vinous

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
Sourced from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto. It is a monopole vineyard and is the largest parcel owned by the Roagna family at 4.88 hectares.
Orientation
Southeast.
Soil
There are 6 unique micro parcels depending on the composition of the terrain which ranges from limestone marl Roca to blue stone.
Viticulture
The vines for this wine are over 50 years old.. The youngest vines for this wine date back to 1937.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 70-90 days.
