Gatinois is a grower Champagne estate based in Aÿ, one of the few villages in Champagne rated 100% Grand Cru and especially prized for Pinot Noir. The estate has been in the same family since the 1600s, and current winemaker Louis Cheval-Gatinois carries on a style that balances ripeness and structure with classical polish.

The Tradition Brut is their core non-vintage cuvée. This bottling is based on the 2020 harvest, blended with reserve wines from older vintages. It’s a blend of around 80–90% Pinot Noir and 10–20% Chardonnay, all from estate vineyards in Aÿ. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and the wine is aged on the lees in bottle for around 24–30 months before disgorgement. A Brut-level dosage (~7 g/L) keeps it balanced and accessible.

In the glass, it shows red apple, white cherry, citrus peel, and toasted brioche, with a creamy mousse and a mineral, slightly smoky finish. This is a Champagne that combines generosity with chalky grip, ideal for richer aperitifs or anything from roast poultry to hard cheese.

Gatinois

The Gatinois family has cultivated vines in Aÿ since 1696. The village is 100% Grand Cru and is renowned for its powerful Pinot Noir, particularly from a local clone called Petit Pinot d’Aÿ, which has tiny berries and is thought to have naturally higher acidity than Burgundy clones. Gatinois Champagnes are traditionally produced, reward long-aging, and are distinctly aromatic and refined...not to mention exceptional values!

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The current release is based on 2016, with reserve wines from 2015 and 2014, Plum, red cherry, spice and cedar accents all flesh out with a bit of time in the glass. A dollop of Chardonnay (10%) adds a lovely kick of freshness to balance things out. Once again, the Gatinois Brut Tradition offers exceptional quality for the money."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
