Gatinois’ Champagne “Tradition” Brut Grand Cru NV, with a base of 2020, is a classic and robust expression of Aÿ, one of Champagne’s most esteemed Grand Cru villages. Crafted predominantly from Pinot Noir, with a small portion of Chardonnay for balance, this cuvée exemplifies the Gatinois family’s dedication to showcasing the power and depth of their terroir. Known for their traditional approach and deep-rooted connection to Aÿ’s chalky soils, Gatinois creates a Champagne that is rich in character and complexity, ideal for those who enjoy a full-bodied, terroir-driven style.

On the nose, “Tradition” reveals inviting aromas of red apple, pear, and brioche, complemented by hints of white flowers and a subtle minerality. The palate is lively and textured, with flavors of baked apple, citrus peel, and a touch of almond. The fine, persistent mousse enhances the wine’s creamy mouthfeel, while the Brut dosage balances its rich fruit and minerality, leading to a crisp, clean finish.

This Champagne pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, from roasted poultry and mushroom dishes to shellfish and aged cheeses. The 2020 base vintage brings youthful energy and a focused acidity to the wine, making “Tradition” both versatile and appealing for celebratory occasions or gourmet pairings. Gatinois’ careful craftsmanship shines through in this elegant, well-structured Champagne.

Gatinois

The Gatinois family has cultivated vines in Aÿ since 1696. The village is 100% Grand Cru and is renowned for its powerful Pinot Noir, particularly from a local clone called Petit Pinot d’Aÿ, which has tiny berries and is thought to have naturally higher acidity than Burgundy clones. Gatinois Champagnes are traditionally produced, reward long-aging, and are distinctly aromatic and refined...not to mention exceptional values!

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The current release is based on 2016, with reserve wines from 2015 and 2014, Plum, red cherry, spice and cedar accents all flesh out with a bit of time in the glass. A dollop of Chardonnay (10%) adds a lovely kick of freshness to balance things out. Once again, the Gatinois Brut Tradition offers exceptional quality for the money."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
