“Cathy Corison continues to do what she has always done: quietly turn out some of the most compelling wines in Napa Valley.”

Masterpieces and Secret Treasures:

Cathy Corison's  Rose, White Wines and Legendary Cabs

Dear Friends,

Three of us visited Cathy Corison in Napa Valley this fall and had a spectacular tasting at a table set out among the vines. The back-vintage Napa Cabs (including mature Kronos!) were almost to good to believe and tasted like the sunshine and the land around us. Cab has never seemed so delicious and also of its place.

But when it came time to head to lunch, the wine we needed to go with the spread we built ourselves at the Oakville Grocer (iykyk) wasn’t one of her famous reds, but an almost unknown white, the bone dry “Corazon” Gewurztraminer.

The Gewurz was bright and fresh and great with goat cheese. But it also had enough body to pair with cold cuts and paté. And the aromatics (perfectly pitched rather than over the top) complemented all the more exotic flavors (greek fish roe dips, it turns out, are great with Gewurtz). It was a simple lunch on picnic tables but with that wine it felt like an absolute feast.

That Gewurtztraminer is part of a trilogy of wines (with a rosé and Riesling) that Cathy makes under the “Corazon” label. All three are beautiful, accessible, great with food. Superficially they may seem like they’re miles from her Cabernet vins de gardes.

But when you taste them side by side you see that they are actually, in profound ways, cut from the same cloth. As straight-up pleasurable as the Corazon wines are, they show the same sort of complexity and elegance as the Cabs. They are a rare chance to see Cathy apply her legendary skills in a whole other, "drink-me-now" context. We wanted to drink them now!

The only problem was that the wines weren’t available in New York. Cathy sells almost everything at the winery, sends a little to some favorite restaurants and California retailers. But we made some calls and managed to finagle a few cases to share with you here, alongside her famous Cabs.

Cathy is a living legend of California wine and her Cabs are rare and delicious, true collectibles. It feels like a minor miracle to us that she also takes the time to make these little jewels – and at a fraction of the price of the big wines.

We’re thrilled to be able to offer the Corazon wines together with Cathy’s famous Cabs, at the best prices we see in New York (and in ultra-rare large format, too). All these wines are limited but if something you want is sold out please email me. Please click here or below to buy your bottles now.

Thank you!
Josh

Corazon

Corison (Corazon), Rose, 2024 - $46.99 $41.99
The Rosé is made from free run juice they collect while bringing in Cabernet Sauvignon for their famous reds. Waste not, want not! It has a beautiful color, lovely red fruited aromatics. It ages on the lees in old barrels and picks up lovely texture and just enough body to balance the fresh acidity. It’s absolutely perfect with everything from pre-dinner snacks, through white meat, and even up to fruit-based desserts. True elegance.

Corison (Corazon), Wirz Vineyard Riesling, 2024 - $53.99 $49.99
The dry Riesling is from the cool Cienega Valley and full of lychee and stone fruit, with hints of apple and a really pretty mineral thread. Delectable.

Corison (Corazon), Gewurztraminer 'Moon Mountain', 2024 $44.99  $39.99
Expressive, refined, and delicious – this is the wine that makes you wonder why you aren’t drinking Gewurz more often.

Corison Cabs

Corison, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021 - $139.99 $124.99
* also in Magnum (1.5L) $299.99 $269.99
"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is gorgeous. Medium in body and super-expressive, the 2021 is a classic Cathy Corison wine. Pipe tobacco, cedar, crushed, leaves and earthy tones all run through this wonderfully nuanced Cabernet Sauvignon. Readers will find an exquisite, alluring old-school Napa Cabernet that delivers the goods, big time. All the elements are so well balanced. As always, the Napa Cabernet is a blend of three sites in St. Helena.” 93 points, Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

Corison, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon “'Kronos,” 2021 $239.99 $219.99
* also in Magnum (1.5L) $499.99 $439.99 (very limited)
The Kronos vineyard has some of Napa's oldest Cabernet vines (planted on St. George rootstock in 1971) and makes one of the world's great Cabernets.

Galloni said: “The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Kronos Vineyard is fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the most elegant wines I have tasted from this site, a vineyard where the tannins can be forbidding at this stage. The long, cool growing season provided ideal conditions for the ripening of seeds and stems. Blackberry, gravel, incense, licorice, dried herbs and espresso build as this brooding Cabernet gradually reveals its charms. This super-classic Kronos was bottled in June 2023 after spending 20 months in barrel.” (Antonio Galloni, Vinous; 97 points)
