Boca, in Alto Piemonte, offers Nebbiolo at its most ethereal—volcanic soils give it savory elegance distinct from Barolo or Barbaresco. Le Piane's 2018 (Nebbiolo and Vespolina) balances power with silky refinement. Sweet tobacco, new leather, cedar, and spice mingle with dried dark fruits, forest fruits, violets, and hints of balsam and citrus. The Austrian owners rescued this unique corner from extinction; the wine rewards their commitment with complexity and grace. Still evolving beautifully.

Swiss wine importer Christoph Künzli arrived in Piedmont's Alto Piemonte region and fell in love. Le Piane, now eight hectares, makes Boca DOC (Nebbiolo-Vespolina blends) and focuses on the local Croatina grape. Some parcels are 100 years old. Rare, serious, worth the hunt.
