Kevin Harvey founded Rhys Vineyards in 2004 with a singular conviction: that California's Santa Cruz Mountains could produce Pinot Noir rivaling the complexity and longevity of great Burgundy. The Horseshoe Vineyard, planted on eleven-million-year-old Monterey shale, is among the estate's most prized sites—rocky, mineral-rich soils that force vines to struggle and concentrate their expression. The 2014 vintage delivered gorgeous cherry, raspberry, and spice-box aromatics with seamless mid-palate density and bright acidity. Farmed organically and biodynamically, vinified with minimal intervention in a gravity-fed cave winery.
