Have a question about this wine or any other in this year's sale?

Benoît Déhu’s Champagne “Cuvée Initiation” Extra Brut NV, with a 2021 base, is a powerful and distinctive expression from the Marne Valley. Known for his singular dedication to biodynamic practices and minimal intervention, Déhu crafts this cuvée with a focus on Pinot Meunier sourced from a single vineyard, “La Rue des Noyers.” The estate’s biodynamic approach ensures that each bottle reflects the essence of its terroir, with vineyard work carried out to preserve the health and unique character of the soil. In the cellar, Déhu ferments and ages the wine in oak barrels, creating a Champagne that is both complex and deeply textured.

The “Cuvée Initiation” opens with aromatic notes of red apple, pear, and citrus, accented by earthy undertones and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is rich and layered, offering a creamy mouthfeel with flavors of ripe stone fruit, lemon zest, and a distinct minerality. The oak aging adds subtle hints of toast and vanilla, while the Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine precise and refreshing, with a clean, mineral-driven finish.

This Champagne is well-suited to pair with savory dishes, such as roasted poultry, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses, which accentuate its depth and complexity. With its 2021 base, the “Cuvée Initiation” displays both the vibrancy of a young vintage and the structure typical of Déhu’s thoughtful winemaking, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts of terroir-driven Champagnes.

Benoit is a Meunier specialist, working his family's vineyards on the western edge of the Vallée de la Marne. Starting in 2011, he started bottling wines under his own name from a single parcel called La Rue des Noyers -- 100% Pinot Meunier, farmed biodynamically, and ploughed mostly by horse. In 2015, he started blending some of this PM with Pinot Noir from a nearby plot, and calls it Initiation.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
