R.H. Coutier’s Champagne “Tradition” Brut Grand Cru NV, with a 2019 base, is an elegant and expressive blend from the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, known for its powerful Pinot Noir and refined Chardonnay. This cuvée showcases the Coutier family’s dedication to tradition, highlighting the richness and depth of Ambonnay’s chalky terroir. Presented in a magnum format (1.5L), this Champagne gains additional aging potential, enhancing its complexity and texture over time. The Brut dosage brings a balanced touch, allowing the wine’s natural structure and fruit to shine.

On the nose, “Tradition” opens with aromas of red apple, ripe pear, and citrus, with subtle hints of brioche, almond, and white flowers. The palate is vibrant and layered, offering flavors of orchard fruits, lemon zest, and a mineral undertone that reflects the Grand Cru soils. The fine, creamy mousse enhances the Champagne’s texture, while the Brut finish leaves a refreshing and elegant impression, with a lingering note of chalk.

Ideal for pairing with roasted poultry, seafood, or soft cheeses, this Champagne’s balance and depth make it a versatile and celebratory choice. The 2019 base vintage contributes youthful energy, while the magnum format allows for graceful aging, making R.H. Coutier’s “Tradition” Brut in 1.5L a perfect choice for special gatherings and refined dining experiences.

R. H. Coutier

Since 1619, Champagne R. H. Coutier has been farming in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, one of the top wine-producing villages in the Montagne de Reims. You may recognize some of the champagnes made from the likes of Bereche, Marie-Noelle Ledru, and of course Krug’s famous single plot, Clos d’Ambonnay.

While Ambonnay is generally regarded as Pinot country, Coutier’s vineyards are planted with one-third Chardonnay and two-thirds Pinot Noir. In fact, in 1946 René Coutier’s father was the first vigneron to plant Chardonnay in the village, which has done well over the ensuing decades and now is as highly regarded as the Pinot Noir from Ambonnay.

The vineyards on the Montagne de Reims have a south by southeast facing exposure to provide a warmer microclimate for France’s coldest and most northern winegrowing region. A higher ratio of clay to the chalky limestone subsoils lends an added roundness to the wines produced here. Their house style marries the richness of the village’s Pinot Noir with the pure, racy crispness of its Chardonnay, a match made in heaven. The Coutiers farm nine hectares sustainably, but keep their production small and focused, selling off 80% of their fruit to the local cooperative and keeping the best fruit to bottle 2000 cases under their own label.

In the winery, whole clusters are pressed with their stems to act as a natural filter for clarity. No barrel fermentation and low dosage on all of the wines offered today an elegant precision to balance the richness of fruit. Typically only half of the wines go through malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness and acidity, but this is also dependent on the vintage. The sign of a great winemaker is always the ability to adapt to whatever nature throws at you.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is fabulous. Rich, ample and creamy in the glass, the Brut Tradition captures all of the natural intensity of Ambonnay in its expansive personality. Pinot Noir drives this blend in both its flavor profile and weight. Red cherry, plum, cinnamon, cedar and dried flowers are some of the many notes that build over time. This release is based on 2013, with 40% reserve wines." -Vinous

Robert Parker

"Disgorged in October 2020 with six grams per liter dosage, the latest rendition of Coutier's NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is based on the 2013 vintage, complemented by fully 40% reserve wines. Exhibiting notions of waxy orchard fruit, honeycomb, mint, tangerine oil and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and pillowy, with tangy acids and a fleshy core of fruit. Full of flavor and character, this is a fine effort."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
