Where Montefico is the elegant academic, Ovello is the powerful athlete in the Produttori del Barbaresco's lineup of single-cru Riservas. The northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco, Ovello drops steeply toward the Tanaro River with mixed southwest and southeast exposures, producing Nebbiolo of explosive fruit and firm, sometimes muscular tannins. The calcareous limestone-and-clay soils add structural depth. The 2011 vintage was unconventional—uneven conditions and low yields concentrated the fruit, creating wines with intense color, abundant tannins, and ripe, almost flamboyant character. This Ovello is energetic and powerful, with searing tannin and exceptional balance. Balsamic notes, dark cherry, and earthy spice characterize the nose, while the palate is dense and salivating. Still youthful and in need of time—give it another five years in the cellar, or decant for two to three hours if drinking now.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello, from one of the coolest zones in Barbaresco, is superb. Here it is the wine's precision and energy - both hard to come by in 2011 - that really stand out. Pine, mint, chalk, bright red berries, blood orange and white pepper are some of the signatures in a brilliant, finely-cut Barbaresco that captures the best of both the vintage and this site. Don't miss it!" -Antonio Galloni

"This vineyard site seems to have absorbed much of the summer heat. The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a round and ripe wine with dark fruit, black cherry and black current. The Ovello vineyard expression is normally one of the lightest and more elegant wines in this Riserva series, but this is not the case in this vintage. There's more brawn and muscle than I remember in the past. In contrast, however, the mouthfeel is more streamlined and delineated than expected." -Monica Larner

"To complete the vertical, Vacca's assistant, Luca Cravanzola, contributed the 2011 from his own personal collection. Vacca calls it a typical global warming year with temperatures reaching 34°C. Harvest was earlier than usual, starting the last week of September. At almost seven years old, this is showing hints of coffee and cocoa backed up by ripe sun-kissed strawberries. The palate, which demonstrates an overtly spicy character, is broad and firmly structured with some warming alcohol poking through. Underneath, minerality and uplifting acidity lend balance and intrigue."

"A peppery, spicy style, this displays cherry, eucalyptus, tar and black pepper aromas and flavors. Firmly tannic, yet with a core of concentrated sweet fruit, tobacco and tea accents on the lingering finish."

"Perfumed with violet, fragrant ripe berry, leather, dark spice and a balsamic note, this is a textbook Nebbiolo. The elegant palate offers Morello cherry, cranberry, white pepper and star anise while firm but ultra-refined tannins provide support. It’s already delicious but has the structure to cellar for several years or more."
